Priority areas
Norges Vel supports smallholders in Madagascar, Mozambique and Tanzania to shift from subsistence-oriented aqua- and agriculture to more commercialised and profitable ways of production and marketing. This is done through supporting smallholders organisations to engage in a value chain approach.
Our priority areas are agriculture and aquaculture, in addition you will find some overarching themes covering all of our projects.
Improved organisation of farmers and their small-scale production
There are numerous challenges for farmers in developing countries. For many it is all about getting out of poverty. Productivity is often low, and these farmers are very susceptible to climate change and unstable weather. Access to markets is limited and it is often hard to borrow money. That is why Norges Vel is working to organise small-scale producers in multiple African countries.
Our contributions mean that small-scale farmers in local communities can cooperate to create more profitable and environmentally friendly businesses.
These are some of our methods
Mobilise small-scale farmers for cooperation and development of agriculture
Organise farmers for joint access to markets
Collective access to credit and financial services
Climate-smart production methods of farming
Sustainable and profitable synergies between food and energy production
Defeating poverty, unemployment and malnourishment
Sustainable fish farming will become increasingly important in a world characterised by climate change and an increasing need for food production. Sustainable aquaculture will provide more nutritional food, economic growth and new employment in many countries.
We will continue to support the work of small-scale fish farmers and entrepreneurs to develop new and existing initiatives to achieve well-structured and profitable businesses.
These are some of our methods
Bottom-up mobilisation of local producers and organisations
Improve the value chain from input to market
Organise network for partners and small-scale producers
Strengthen the competency on sustainable aquaculture technology for improved production
Secure sustainable economy and financing
Implement risk mitigating measures to avoid ecological imbalances
